Editorial, Design, and Production Director Ana Bichanich Leads New Accessibility Initiative

When Ana Bichanich joined the University of South Carolina Press in September to lead its Editorial, Design, and Production department, she brought 10 years of production editor experience as well as a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm for creating accessible ebooks.

As Ana explains, there are numerous ways to increase accessibility in book publishing. For example, ebooks can be coded to be read by text-to-speech devices and so that text can be adjusted for readers with low-vision and dyslexia. A book’s design elements, including clear navigation and headers, are also essential for guiding readers through the text with ease.

This effort to improve accessibility in USC Press books goes hand-in-hand with the press’s recent launch of Open Carolina, an open access platform, and an overall push to make high-quality scholarship and storytelling available to the widest audience.
