About the Press

Established in 1944, the University of South Carolina Press is one of the oldest and most distinguished publishing houses in the South. With more than 1,300 books available in print and digital formats, and publishing approximately forty new books annually, UofSC Press serves the state and the University of South Carolina. Our publications educate, inform, entertain, and inspire while advancing knowledge.  

In helping the University fulfill its mission of research, teaching, and outreach, UofSC Press publishes a wide range of critically acclaimed works in the following subjects: Southern History, African American Studies, Civil Rights, and South Carolina. In addition, UofSC Press publishes scholarly works in Literary Studies and Rhetoric/Communication. Our editorial profile—the subject matter of our books—aligns with several of the institutional strengths of the University and underscores UofSC Press’s mission to serve teachers, learners, and readers in the state, the academy, and the broader culture in North America and around the globe. 

All our publications go through a rigorous peer-review process, and all must be approved prior to publication by our Press Committee.

UofSC Press’s signature publications include South Carolina: A History, by UofSC historian Walter Edgar; Gullah Images by South Carolina artist Jonathan Green; Blessed Experiences: Genuinely Southern, Proudly Black by South Carolina Congressman James E. Clyburn; and Working South by Charleston artist Mary Whyte.  

The staff of UofSC Press includes eleven full-time publishing professionals and several student interns each semester.
