This fall, University of South Carolina Press welcomed its first Graduate Acquisitions Assistant, Emma Silvis, who is earning a dual master’s degree in English and library and information science. In partnership with USC's College of Information and Communication (CIC), this new graduate student opportunity runs for two academic semesters (fall and spring) and is open to all graduate students in the CIC's Journalism and Mass Communication and Information Science programs.
Emma first started gaining experience in book publishing as an undergraduate intern at USC Press during the spring 2024 semester. Now, under the direction of Associate Editorial Director Aurora Bell, Emma is building on that experience. Her responsibilities include summarizing book projects for internal discussions and marketing, researching appropriate scholarly peer reviewers, and preparing manuscripts for copyediting.
After graduation, Emma plans on pursuing a career working with books, whether as an acquisitions editor, or an archivist preserving rare books and manuscripts.
