For many readers, Hunter S. Thompson evokes a spirit of counterculture and mystery. Best known for his books, Fear and Loathing in Law Vegas, and Hell’s Angels, his other works and troubled life remain largely out of public memory.
In a recent interview by Lawrence Peryer, The Tonearm, Kevin J. Hayes discusses his new book, Understanding Hunter S. Thompson, in which he offers nuanced insight into Thompson’s literary career and lesser-known works including early articles he wrote while traveling in South America. Although Thompson was a talented writer, drugs and alcohol use curbed his continued success as a writer.
