When Shannon Ivey was 42 and a single mom, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 rectal cancer. In an interview with Today.com, Shannon shares how she attributed early symptoms to perimenopause and lifelong gut issues. It wasn’t until she experienced dramatic weight loss, losing 26 pounds in six months, that she realized she needed medical attention.

In her new book, Welcome to the Sh*t Show: A Memoir of Colorectal Cancer and the Power of Self-Advocacy, Shannon details how she navigated the health system on her own while working full-time and taking care of her 7-year-old son.

With colorectal cancer now the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in people under 50, Shannon urges people to learn the symptoms and go see a doctor if they notice any changes to their body.
