Whether one's garden is a window sill, a condominium patio, a surburban lot, or country acreage, The Piedmont Garden offers simple, sound, easy-to-follow, and often humorous advice on growing beautiful ornamentals and productive herbs and vegetables in the Piedmont region of the southern United States.

The book is different from most others in two ways. First, because each section gives the complete cultural requirements of the plant subject, the reader can skip from section to section, reading about plants that are of particular interest without fear of missing details about their care. Second, the book is organized on a month by month basis so that plants appear in the order they require care. The more experienced gardner will find information about more challenging horticultural efforts. Both common and botanical names are used and a listing of plant societies is included.

A Georgia native, Juanita B. Garrison does her gardening at Denver Downs Farm near Anderson, South Carolina, in the state's Piedmont section. With the help of her husband, and an assortment of children, in-laws, and grandchildren, Mrs. Garrison grows large numbers of shrubs, flowers, herbs, and vegetables on the grounds surrounding their 100-year-old farmhouse. Her early career as a newspaper reporter quickly turned to homemaking, but she has continued to write periodically on a variety of subjects. Often busy as a garden clubber, lecturer, and flower show judge and with church and civic organizations, Mrs. Garrison combines the two things she enjoys most in The Piedmont Garden—gardening and writing.
